Sommeren ´69 myldrer med epokegørende begivenheder. Enorme folkemængder demonstrerer mod Vietnamkrigen. Apollo astronauterne er på vej mod månen. Woodstock-festivalen venter lige om hjørnet. Autoriteter er yt. Hippier er hot. Peace and Love er in. Måske er det derfor, Pearl føler, at hun er låst fast, at livet bare passerer forbi hende. Det er ikke fordi, hun ikke elsker hendes mand og to dejlige børn. Måske er hun bare blevet gift for tidligt. Måske har hun bare haft for travlt med at være trofast hustru og flittig husmor. Walker Jerome bliver manden, der vækker alle hendes indestængte følelser. Den nat Neil Armastrong sætter foden på Månen, og hele verden - inklusiv Pearls mand - i åndeløs spænding følger begivenheden på tv, sniger Pearl sig afsted til et stævnemøde. Den nat bliver hun en ny kvinde, sprudlende af livslyst og glødende af hemmelig indre energi...
